Description

The Laboratory Technical Specialist ensures quality specimens for Laboratory testing by recognizing pre-analytical factors that adversely affect patient results. Operates systems/methodologies in order to produce timely and accurate data for patients, quality control and proficiency testing. Reports clinical data accurately and efficiently is expected. Participates in departmental development by demonstrating operational knowledge and adhering to regulatory standards. Communicates effectively and working cooperatively with team members to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.

Hours: 3pm-11pm

Location: INOVA Central Lab, Juniper Street Fairfax Virginia

Requirements for consideration:

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university including biological science, chemistry, and mathematics courses.

Years of Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in an accredited laboratory under the supervision of a pathologist certified by the American Board of Pathology
  • Preferred experience: Previous experience performing, implementing, and troubleshooting culture and molecular (qualitative and quantitative) based infectious disease testing. 

Certification:

  • ASCP Certification consistent with the scope of responsibility (MLS/MT,MLT, HT, HTL, BB, C, H, M, CT) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or Laboratory Technologist Certification (HEW).

Job Responsibilities

  • Follows standard protocol for patient/donor identification and specimen/blood product labeling including final verification.
  • Prepares and distributes specimens to departments according to specimen requirement and priority delivery.
  • Documents, per facility process, when a specimen does not meet acceptable criteria for result reporting.
  • Perform routine microbiology benchwork, including culture reading and molecular testing.
  • Serve as a technical lead during the evening shift, assisting with procedural questions and troubleshooting instruments.
  • Ensure proper quality control (QC) and maintenance procedures are performed and documented for the shift.
  • Train and assess the competency of testing personnel.
  • Perform verifications for new tests.
  • Conduct Beaker LIS testing and troubleshoot any issues.
  • Review daily results and perform monthly QC review.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
