Essential Duties and Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • A licensed physician, physical therapist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, audiologist, social worker, or a registered nurse.  
  • Must have a current license in the state of practice.
  • The Director of Nursing/Agency Supervisor is available at all times during the operating hours of the agency and participates in all activities relevant to the provision of home health services.

Essential Job Duties (include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Assures, in conjunction with the Administrator that an adequate quantity and quality of staff are available and scheduled according to the needs of the patient.
  • Is responsible for the quality of nursing services provided by the agency.
  • Supervises all nursing and therapeutic services offered by the Home Health Agency.
  • Hires all nursing supervisors and other personnel with Administrator approval.
  • Approves the selection of all field staff hired.
  • Assists with recruitment of professional personnel.
  • Assures compliance with all state, federal, and local laws regarding licensure and certification of staff.
  • Participates in the development of policies and procedures.
  • Assures adherence to agency procedures and policies by all staff.
  • Assures that all professional staff maintains professional standards.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of medical records as prescribed and in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Ensures with the Director of Quality Management that all physicians’ orders are current and being followed precisely by nursing personnel.
  • Participates in the in-service programs.
  • Promotes Home Health referrals in the home care community.
  • Stays informed about changes in the field of nursing and Home Health Care and shares information with appropriate staff and administrative personnel.
  • Assist with the review and evaluation of the home health agency.
  • The Director of Nursing/Agency Supervisor / designee –is available during the hours of operation and assures that staff is assigned appropriately after hours for “On Call Services”.
  • Complies with Homecare Agency’s Infection Control Policies.
  • Assures that performance evaluations are completed at intervals stated in agency personnel policy.
  • Participates in “On Call” rotations when applicable.
  • May be required to do intermittent visits following the RN job description, when applicable.
  • Complies with Homecare Agency’s HIPAA Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Administrator.

Working Environment:

Equipment and Supplies: Prudent and efficient use of routine office supplies and equipment. Prudent and efficient use of routine medical supplies, nursing bag contents, sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, instrument packs, and routine office supplies and equipment.

Knowledge and Competency:

  • Must demonstrate basic knowledge of all procedures included in the DON job description. Must have the ability to follow instruction from the Administrator and the physician. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, managers, patients and co-workers. Must have effective means of transportation, which will enable employee to make visits to patients’ homes if needed. Must have the ability to impart knowledge and skills to others on their own level of understanding and must have the ability to effectively cope with patients, families and all others with varying backgrounds.
  • Skills include the ability to use cognizant approach to problem solving in delivering patient care with considerations being given to the patient’s past experience, finances and other resources. Skills are needed to assess both physical and psychological needs of patients and institute the appropriate nursing intervention. Must possess ingenuity to handle medical and situational emergencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information relating to patient. Will discuss only those aspects necessary to care and treatment of patient with those directly involved in the patient’s care.

Physical Demands: Must be able to complete all physical demands of the job, which may include, but not be limited to: the ability to lift and transfer patients, carry supplies, and read 12 point or larger typewritten print. Have corrected vision and hearing within normal range and have manual dexterity with normal range of motion of all extremities. May be requested to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime. Must be able to work alone without usual support systems immediately available in acute care settings. Must have the ability to deal with abrupt schedule changes and to maintain objectivity in coping with the stress of working with acute, chronic and terminally ill patients.

Work Ethic: Complies with the Homecare Agency dress code, projects a professional attitude toward self, patients, and other staff members, and follows department public relation policies regarding outside speaking and professional affiliations, clearing all such requests through Homecare Agency.
